Into the woods… exploring OTWAY NATIONAL PARK

Who knew trees this tall existed in Australia? Any time we’re road tripping along the Great Ocean Road, Beech Forest in the Great Otway National Park is one of our favourite stops and a place we love to recommend. It’s home to the world’s tallest tree species that have thrived in Otway soil, far from their native California. The first time stepping through these massive trunks feels like an other-worldly experience and without realising it, your voice drops to a whisper…

The Redwoods in Beech Forest are some of the tallest in the world, reaching up to 60 meters (around 200 feet) tall. Their straight trunks and dense foliage create a majestic and otherworldly atmosphere.

The main walking loop is an easy 1.6-kilometer (about 1-mile) circuit, perfect for all ages and fitness levels. It’s a relatively flat path, making it accessible for most visitors.

The forest is open year-round, but the best times to visit are typically during the spring and autumn months, when the weather is milder and the forest is lush and green. Early mornings are especially magical, with mist often swirling around the trunks of the trees, creating a mystical atmosphere.

“Do you think they’re listening?”

“Why are we whispering?”

Feel enchanted in The Redwoods along with other iconic destinations along the Great Ocean Road including the 12 Apostles and magical waterfalls.
